Why does it say message blocking is active?

“Message blocking is active” is an error that sometimes appears on your iPhone. No matter which iPhone you own, it just appears. There are multiple fixes to make it work. Nowadays people prefer texting more so it is important to fix these errors which come as a barrier. This error appears in android devices also but that happens very less, appears a lot on iPhones.

Fix 1: Check if the number is blocked

Many times people block a contact and try to send them a message, but that’s not possible. You need to unblock that number on which you are trying to send.

To do so,

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone and scroll down.
  2. You will find “Messages” in-between Phone and Facetime.
  3. Tap Messages and scroll down to Blocked Contacts.
  4. Tap blocked contacts and just swipe left to the contact which is blocked and you were trying to send a message on.

Voila, it’s done. Now you can try to send a message on the number previously you were trying to send.

This fix works most of the time but sometimes, the problem is different. But, we have more fixes to fix it.

Fix 2: Check your cellular plan

You can check your cellular plan details because sometimes there are only calls included in your plan, not messages or the internet. Make sure your plan has SMS/MMS included in it otherwise it won’t send any message. You can only do calls on that.

If you have an SMS/MMS plan included in your current cellular plan, do check the network status if it is good.

Fix 3: Enable/Disable Airplane Mode

To do so,

For iPhone X or above models:

  1. Swipe down from the top right to open the control center.
  2. Tap Flight/Airplane mode logo to enable it.
  3. Now wait for a minute and tap that again to disable airplane mode.

For iPhone 8 or below models:

  1. Swipe up from the bottom to open the control center.
  2. Tap the Airplane mode logo to enable it.
  3. After a minute, tap that again to disable it.

It’s done, now your message should be sent without any error. If you still get “message blocking active”, you need to try other fixes.

Fix 4: Restart your iPhone

If you tried all these fixes above and still get an error message block active on your iPhone, then it’s time to restart your device.

To do so,

  1. Press and Hold Power and Volume Up buttons together.
  2. Slide to shut down your iPhone.
  3. Now wait for a minute and hold the power button until you get the apple logo.
  4. Now, try to send a message and see if the error persists.

Fix 5: Verify Number

Double-check the number on which you are trying to send a message. Check the country code if it’s incorrect. Because a message will only send if the country code is correct.

If you are trying to send a message to a person who is in another country, then enter that country’s code and check if you have an international SMS/MMS plan included in your current plan. If it’s not in your cellular plan, you need to get it otherwise you will get this error.

Check contact name and number because sometimes we just select a name and don’t check the number we have saved. Go to contacts and tap on the name you are trying to send a message to. Now check the number if it’s correct. If it’s not, just tap on the edit button on the top right. Enter the correct number and tap save.

Fix 6: Check the Date & Time of your iPhone

It is an important factor that iPhone uses, the date & time should be correct when you are sending an SMS/MMS. It is not important but sometimes this restricts you from sending an SMS.

To do so,

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Go to General and Tap Date & Time.
  3. Tap Set automatically and close all apps from recent apps.
  4. Now open Messages and try to send a message.

This fix works most of the time, you must try it.

Fix 7: Update your iPhone to Latest Version

Some features stop working over time when the company launches a new update for your device.

To do an update,

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Go to General and tap Software Update.
  3. It will start searching for an iOS update.
  4. If there is an update available for your device, do it.
  5. Tap update now and it’ll start downloading the update.
  6. Make sure you have a minimum 50% battery because an update requires it or just plug in the charger and make it at least 20% battery charge.

Keep connected to Wi-Fi when doing an update because it can cause extra charges when you are on cellular data.

After the successful update, try to send a message. Even the latest iPhone 13 also gets this error.

Fix 8: Reset Network Settings

There are chances that your network settings are incorrect. To fix it,

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Go to General and Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Now tap Reset Network Settings.

Fix 9: Contact Cellular Network Customer Support

If none of these fixes above work for your iPhone, which means your cellular has some problems or your SIM card needs to be replaced. Try contacting customer support and explain the issue, they will fix this from their end. If not, contact Apple Customer Support and tell them about this issue.

You can change your cellular network if that doesn’t work. But, make sure you have an SMS/MMS plan in your cellular plan and an international SMS/MMS plan if you are sending international SMS. There are many cellular networks in the market. You can port your existing mobile number to another network by asking them.
